Job Description

Who We’re Looking For

You love technology and really get excited about leading a technical team. You love to make sure all the trains run on time, any roadblocks are cleared and are constantly looking for ways to make the team and how they deliver products more efficient and predictable.

While you can talk technology and code, you also really enjoy spending your time leading a team, relying on their technical input and watching them produce code and products that are greater than the sum of their parts.  When hiring, you know when a candidate can raise the bar of the team and when they may not be a match. You also enjoy mentoring other developers through 1on1s, talking about their current challenges and their long and short term goals. You are pro-active and constantly looking for way to improve how your team builds software.

You'll work on everything from hiring to 1-on-1 meetings, from discussing technology to writing documents, from helping a product manager build a feature to helping support troubleshoot it. Sometimes all in the same day.

You are a leader who:

  • Focuses on shipping software that matters to your users and that matters to the company you’re building it for.
  • Experimented with and survived many different types of development and project methodologies, which has left you with a healthy appreciation for what works the “agile” methodologies and those that came before (and after) them. You know one size doesn’t fit all.
  • Loves creating an atmosphere where the team can thrive and growth through encouragement and mentorship.
  • Brings passion, innovation and problem solving to every endeavor and have fun doing it.
  • Has a strong desire to help your team get better each day and isn’t afraid to have the hard conversations needed to help point the team in the right direction.
  • Desires to be personally responsible for an engineering team that produces production level code. The buck stops with you.
  • Understands that communication is the biggest responsibility of your job but you need to focus on it to get it right. You care about how your work and attitude affects others around you.
  • Lastly, everyone knows that when you take on a task regardless if it’s huge and scary or tiny and boring, you’re going to see it through to the best of your ability.

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll be working alongside our product team, building apps that make every piece of hourly workforce management - scheduling, time tracking, shift trading and more - easy and straightforward, for managers and employees alike. We not looking for you just to complete a task but build a product together with product management, designer, other developers and QA on a cross-functional team. You'll work on everything from hiring to mentoring, from 1on1s to performance reviews, from helping a Product Manager figure out how to get something shipped to helping support get there bugs in the pipeline to be fixed. Sometimes all in the same day.

Responsibilities include:

  • Establishing focus and execution of the team to build new features, and analyzing (and reacting) to the results you discover from our system services and user feedback. We love data and to aid us in making decisions.
  • Mentorship and growth of the team members.
  • Hiring a stand out team.
  • Constantly evaluating and building engineering processes that helps the team run efficiently and has fun doing it.

Experience and Skills Needed

  • Significant real world experience with running the day to day operations of an agile engineering team. You may even be a Certified Scrum Master but knows what works and doesn’t work for a team.
  • Strong experience building and leading a technical team. You have helped develop leaders that have developed other leaders.
  • Have conducted effective one on one and reviews which both celebrate successes and talk about areas of growth.

What’s in it for you:

  • Passionate coworkers -- you’ll work with open-minded, enthusiastic people who will constantly challenge and motivate you to go above and beyond to produce great work and grow in your career.
  • Transparency -- you’ll experience an open door policy that gives you the unique opportunity of having direct and informal access to our entire team.
  • Individual ownership -- you’ll be empowered to take personal ownership of projects that can directly impact the future direction and overall success of our products.
  • Diversity of thought -- you’ll become part of a talented team with a wide range of skills, experience, and philosophy.

We are:

  • A communication and collaboration company used daily by tens of thousands of business locations to schedule hundreds of thousands of hourly workers around the world.
  • A well-funded ($15M Series B in June ‘16) 100+ person company growing at a fast rate.
  • A 3X Best Places to Work

  • The 2013 Minnesota Cup High Tech Division Winner

From our employees:

  • “I work here because the team is awesome. There's no politics, there's no middle management second guessing everything or micro-managing my time, and everyone treats each other with respect.”
  • “There’s so much to do to make the app a world-class app, I’m anxious to get it there and I believe I know how to do it. I enjoy building things, so this is right up my alley!”
  • “What's cool about the work - The fact that I'm legitimately given the latitude to directly contribute to new initiatives and major product changes. I'm not micromanaged. I am empowered to determine what to do to help grow the company and to go do it.”
  • “The people who work here are a lot of fun! Even though we’ve grown to 100 employees it’s still easy to get to know people especially if you join in on the lunch room shenanigans ;) The company activities we do are always fun too.”
